Kit Bell is our Adjudicator this year

Born in Vancouver, B.C. Kit attended the University of British Columbia, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in 1974.  Throughout her life Kit has always created art and although her professional career took her into the world of computers, art always remained a strong interest.

Kit moved to Ottawa, Ontario after graduating from UBC where she began to paint landscapes in oils.  She was represented by the Inspiration Art Gallery in Ottawa and by the Firehall Gallery in Perth, Ontario.  She took the opportunity to study at the Ottawa School of Art and exhibited her work at the BCAL Clothesline Fair in Ottawa (a juried show) for several years.

After moving to Kelowna, BC in 1992, a busy career prevented her from pursuing art for nearly 15 years.  Returning in 2007 to painting, Kit has picked up where she left off.  Continuing to expand her knowledge and develop her technique and vision, she enjoys working in a variety of media.

A frequent instructor for the Federation of Canadian Artists, Kit provides critiques, mentorship and teaches workshops. When the pandemic closed down in-person teaching, Kit was able to utilize her computer skills to take her workshops online, reaching a larger, more geographically diverse audience.

Check out her website for more info: www.kitbell.ca or come to the Artist Lecture!

ART WORKSHOP

The Power of Underpainting

Register and join Kit Bell in this great hands on workshop.

Whether painting in acrylic, oil, or watercolour, the use of an underpainting will establish values and define composition in a painting.  Following the path set up by the underpainting, subsequent layers of paint allow the buildup of visual depth and rich texture.

Experiment by starting a painting with a loose, colourful underpainting. Learn various methods of progressing with the image, such as transparent, opaque, positive and negative painting. Kit will provide instruction in the form of a presentation to show finished paintings and the various stages of their development as well as demonstrations and lots of one-on-one instruction.

Although the same techniques will also work in oil, acrylics are recommended for this workshop because of the quick drying time. Watercolours are also an option. Demonstrations will be in acrylic.

COST: 50$

PAYMENTS: payments in cash or cheque will be accepted from registrants during the drop-off days April 12th and 13th, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Haida Museum in Skidegate. You can also send your e-transfer to allislandartshow@gmail.com,  make the secret question AIAS workshop? Answer: AIAS2024
